Eating Disorders as a Secure Base
Eating disorders are often understood in terms of the behaviours and physical risks associated with them, but what happens when we begin to consider the emotional and relational functions they serve? For some children and adolescents, an eating disorder may come to function as a secure base, offering a sense of safety, predictability and control in the face of overwhelming emotions, relational difficulties or experiences of insecurity.
In this talk, Lesley will explore the relationship between eating disorders and attachment, considering how these difficulties may develop and the important role they can play in a young person’s emotional world. By looking beyond the symptoms to understand what the eating disorder may be communicating or protecting against, we can begin to develop a more compassionate and relational understanding of the young person’s experience.
The talk will consider how clinicians and carers can work collaboratively to recognise and address underlying attachment needs, helping young people develop alternative ways of managing emotional distress and building a greater sense of safety in their relationships.
